How to use a semicolon - The Oatmeal

Read the whole guide. It’s fantastic and the resulting poster is one that I would hang in my classroom to help distinguish me amongst students as the cool teacher that likes words but isn’t a snob about it.

The semicolon is one of my favorite punctuations.  I try to use it often, but I’m always just a little unsure if I’m using it correctly.  This guide should obviously rectify that problem.
My foundation for using the semicolon actually comes from a grammar system that I learned in middle and high school called Links.  Heard of it before?  If not, it just uses simple grammar equations to help you remember what goes where.  For example:
S, cc S = Sentence Comma Coordinating Conjunction Sentence
S; cc, S = well, you get the picture.
Anyway, that’s as much grammar as I like to talk about in a day, but it just brought me back to the old classroom for a moment.
